Semirigid/Malleable

  • Easy to use: simply bend up or bend down
  • Good for patients with manual dexterity issues, there is no pump to manipulate
  • Infection is virtually non-existent
  • Erosion through the glans (head) or urethra can occur due to constant pressure since it does not deflate
  • Very simple surgical procedure, with short recovery, no blood loss incurred
  • Can be cheaper than the inflatable penile implant
  • Has an abnormal feel and appearance, because the penis is always hard, and can poke or stick out unnaturally
  • About 5-10% of implants done in the United States
  • Can be used in a “salvage” operation if infection occurs
